Wedi transforms the work of tiling

WEDI BALCO BEST FOR BEETHAM TOWER

Over 1250m2 of Wedi BA Balco is being installed for the apartment balconies at the prestigious 39 floor Beetham Tower at Holloway Circus in the heart of Birmingham city centre.

Balco is the exterior graded version of Wedi Tilebacker Board, and provides the ideal waterproof and thermaly insulating substrate for exposed tile finishes.

In addition, 54 special size Fundo walk-in-shower bases with deluxe stainless steel grids are to be fitted within the penthouses, duplex apartments and luxury flats located on the upper half of this stunning new Birmingham landmark. The penthouses are expected to be sold early in 2006 for around £1.4m each!

On the very top three floors, the penthouses and duplex apartments have been contained within a distinctive projecting belvedere by Ian Simpson Architects. However, the tower`s distinguishing feature is its glass façade with green zebra- stripe patterning (to help reduce the heat of the sun).

Simpson has also curved the glass around the corner of the building, a difficult to achieve but distinctive detail. Inside is an inner glass wall with sliding doors, while the outer skin has large
sliding louvers opening on to the Balco substrated balconies.

Beetham Tower is symbolic of the repopulation trend taking place in Birmingham and other city centres throughout the UK. The main contractors were Laing O`Rourke , the Balco and tiling installation undertaken by Midland Marble and the Fundo installation by Ruddy Joinery.
